Exciting Opportunities for OMS Athletes!

As a winter sports athlete, the goal is to improve and compete at the highest level possible. This year, we have had many athletes achieve great things, which has earned them some incredible upcoming opportunities!

OMS student-athlete, Josh Rosenberg, had a phenomenal year in alpine ski racing. He won the U14 Eastern Championships, which earned him a spot at U16 Nationals this spring. Due to his high achievements over the winter, he has been invited to US Ski Team Men’s D-Team on snow project at Mount Hood at the end of June. The head coach for this project is Sasha Rearick who is the current US Mens Development Head Coach and former Head Coach of the US Ski Team for 10 years. Rearick oversaw the success of athletes such as Ted Ligety, Lindsey Vonn, Bode Miller, Julia Mancuso, Marco Sullivan, Darin Ralves, Andrew Weibrecht and Mikaela Shiffrin. The goal of this camp is for athletes to receive fundamental training on varied terrain, along with providing athletes crossover exposure to compete at the most elite levels. To be invited to this camp is a tremendous opportunity to ski and train with not only some of the best coaching staff in the country, but to have the pace of the fastest skiers from birth year 2005 and up in the country. Josh has also expressed how cool it is to see his hard work starting to pay off!

Accompanying Josh as a guest coach to the D-Camp will be Roger Kimball, OMS Head Men’s FIS Coach and level 400 certified US Ski and Snowboard coach. Josh said, “I’m glad that I will have an OMS coach supporting me and making sure I get the most out of the camp.” We are very proud that Josh will be attending this camp and know that he will have a great experience!

Last season, two of our former athletes, Will and Jack Beney, decided to return to OMS to wrap up their PG training before heading off to college this fall. The athletes joined the U19 FIS team at OMS, coached by Roger Kimball, where they competed and both did very well. The hard work paid off and we are excited to announce that both Will and Jack qualified for the Great Britain FIS Alpine Squad! Will has qualified for this accomplishment before and was on the squad last season and this is Jack’s first time! Will and Jack will continue to work hard towards higher goals including Great Britain’s Europa Cup and World Cup squads.

After working so closely with Will and Jack last season, Head Coach Roger Kimball, has some great things to say about these athletes: “Will, Jack and I spent a lot of time together this winter and it was fun to see their shared commitment manifest through such different personalities. Ultimately these styles were complementary and they helped bring out the best in each other. I'm very proud of both boys for meeting objective criteria and earning selection to Great Britain's Alpine FIS Squad. This is a validation of all of their hard work and perseverance both on and off snow. It's also a terrific example to our younger Okemo Mountain School athletes of what they can achieve.

I'm also thrilled that Jack will commence his collegiate career at Babson in the fall and Will has earned a spot on the roster as a University of New Hampshire Wildcat. UNH is a NCAA Division I powerhouse, routinely earning top individual and team results in the highly competitive Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association circuit and at National Championships. Here Will can test his mettle in a field of athletes that includes active World Cuppers. I know Will will continue to progress and his infectious work ethic  will make his whole team better. At Babson Jack promises to help lead a strong team in an increasingly competitive USCSA division. Jack's even temperament and quiet but steady determination helped him make a quantum leap in both slalom and giant slalom events this winter. I'm very excited to see Jack's impressive trajectory continue as a Babson Beaver.
